After enduring days, weeks or months of chronic torture, O’Brien acts as Winston’s Grand Inquisitor and explains why two and two must sometimes make five for obedient citizens in the Big Brother state. And sometimes three.
O’Brien subjects Winston to electro-shock treatment and tells Winston that he is insane and imagines things that he believes actually happened in the past. He must be cured.
The chapter ends with Winston wanting to know what exactly awaits him in Room 101.
