Part II, Chapter 6 recounts the first real meeting between Winston and O’Brien, the affable Inner Party man whom Winston believes is secretly potting against Big Brother. O’Brien button-holes Winston about his excellent use of Newspeak but suspects he isn’t aware of recent upgrades to the language. O'Brien offers to provide Winston with the brand-new Tenth Edition Dictionary of Newspeak. He can call at O’Brien’s house any night to pick it up.
Winston believes O’Brien is quietly confessing his subversion and that he is working against the regime and plotting something terribly unlawful.
