In Part II, Chapter 4 Winston and Julia spend an evening in the upper room rented from Mr. Charrington, the antique and bric-a-brac dealer. They make love and relax on June evening while outside the flat the proles conduct their dreary lives. Julia brings, coffee, sugar … and cosmetics for her. A rat pokes it’s head out of a hole in the floor and Winston reveals his secret fear of these rodents. Interestingly, when Winston tells Charrington why he wants to rent the room the older man understands that Winston just wants his privacy. A yearning for privacy: perhaps the key to understanding 1984.
