Chapter 5 is a vivid desciption of how collectivism is the greater leveler of reducing everyone to poverty and eating sordid food in a greasy cafeteria. It is a world of constantly depleted expectations. We also learn how Newspeak is a language that does not invent words but destroys them. The object is to force people to speak and to think with less frequency.
